KXD W55 is a modern looking phone which created a unique brushed metal back. It has a reasonably big 5.5″ IPS display, MT6580 quad-core processor, 8.0MP+2.0MP Back Camera and 5.0MP Front Camera, 2500mAh high density battery, 1G RAM+8G ROM, micro SD card expansion and dual SIM support.

KXD W55 unboxing

The contents of the KXD W55 retail box are as basic as they get: a microUSB cable, a charger and a manual.

Design

The KXD W55 is as bigger and thinner than the KXD W50, compare their dimensions: W55: 152.9mm×76.9mm×10.1mm, W50: 143.9mm×71.7mm×10.3mm.

The KXD W55 has a 5.5 inch 16:9 big screen and display enhancement technology provide brighter view, you can enjoy your content even in direct sunlight. And there is an Asahi-Glass 2 to keep it safe from scratches.

For the first time on a KXD though, there is now a high-res 5MP selfie camera at the front, which is a rare treat in this price bracket. A tiny notification LED is hidden nearby.

The whole frame and rear are made out of brushed metal. The chamfer where the sides meet the back helps the grip, with satin-like sheen and hand feel, you will be amazed by how stylish it looks and feels. The tiny strips were carved out and then painted with the same matching gold hue, but with Satin-Like Sheen AND Curved Body.

The KXD W55 might come without a trendy wide screen, but it’s a very well built phone with contemporary looks. In spite of the low price, KXD cared enough to make a solid handset with a very secure grip. Even better, the mostly matte finish does well to keep it nearly smudge-proof. For an entry-level phone, that’s more than we would have asked for.

Battery Life

The KXD W55 is powered by a 2500mAh battery and advanced battery saving technology, our W55 can confidently last a full day of medium-to-heavy use. W55’s Li-Po battery provides up to a high density of 650 Wh/L, it also features 600 battery cycles which means it can still retain 80% of the rated capacity after 600 full charge/recharge cycles.

KXD OS

Experience the latest Android 6.0 with KXD custom UI and several handful additional features. No bloatware, pure experience.

Benchmarks and performance

The KXD W55 is powered by a fast and efficient SC9832E Quad-Core 1.3 GHz processor, with 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM, delivering smooth experience for your everyday use.

Camera

8MP +2MP main camera
The KXD W55’s main camera has a 8MP+2MP sensor sitting behind f/2.2 large aperture., making every photo sharper and clearer. Phase-detection autofocus is available, and there is a single LED flash. The camera interface features toggles for HDR, and flash on the left.

The image quality is good – photos are sharp and with enough detailed. The colors are true to life, though sometimes a bit muted. There is noise, but considering the f/2.2 aperture, the levels are just fine for the class. The dynamic range is nothing to talk about, although it did manage to surprise us in more demanding scenes where the regular samples turned out better than the overexposed HDR ones.

The KXD W55 low-light shots came out soft in a variety of scenes. You can see what’s in the picture, just don’t expect much detail when you zoom in. There is a lot of noise, sometimes we also got blurry images due to the lack of stabilization, but those still would do for the social networks.

Selfies

The 5MP front shooter on the W55 features a soft light front LED flash/beauty mode so you can take nicer selfies no matter when and where you are. With years of experience accumulated in photography algorithm, your selfies will be stunning.

The 5MP selfie camera is probably one of the highlights of the KXD W55. The selfie samples came out with enough detail, though a little bit noisy, but with high contrast, and pleasant colors. The dynamic range is about average.
We noticed that there is a specific distance at which your face will be in full focus and this distance is rather close to the phone. If you miss the sweet spot, your face will not be tack sharp.

Dual SIM Full Expansion

W55 features two micro SIM slots and a microSD card slot for expansion of up to 64GB. So stay connected on worldwide 3G network and never worry about running out of storage.

The Competition
The KXD W55 is one of the cheaper options in a lineup that’s more than reasonably priced to begin with. Like we noticed reviewing its siblings, budget phones are not what they used to be and the competition is only getting tougher. Then again, KXD is probably the go-to brand for performance at the right price.
